Add ‘Sober Ride Home’ to Your Canada Day Celebration Checklist

If you are raising some glasses of birthday cheer to mark Canada Day, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are asking you to leave the driving to someone sober.

“Impaired driving is no accident,” said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. “Far too often, people make the decision to drive after drinking, wrongly assuming their abilities are not impaired. They put themselves, their passengers and everyone around them at risk. The result is hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year.”

The tragic deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving could be avoided for the sake of a few minutes of planning. MADD Canada and Allstate Canada are asking everyone to play it safe and make responsible decisions. Call a cab, take public transit, arrange for a designated driver or plan to stay the night. Party hosts should encourage their guests to do the same.

Also remember that impaired driving relates not only to cars and trucks, but that operating any vehicle – including boats and ATVs – while impaired is illegal and extremely dangerous.

Getting the sober driving message out to the public is a priority for MADD Canada and its sponsors, including Allstate Canada. As a long-time sponsor, Allstate Canada also partners with MADD Canada on dedicated awareness campaigns, such as Project Red Ribbon, Campaign 911, Strides for Change and our School Assembly Program.

“This Canada Day, we encourage everyone to plan their celebrations responsibly and to think about the consequences of a bad decision before making it”, said John O’Donnell, President and CEO of Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “One of Allstate Canada’s core values is to help make communities safer and better places for everyone and it’s why we’re invested in working with MADD Canada to spread the message of safe sober driving to Canadians everywhere.”

Look out for your own safety and the safety of others by:
Never driving a car, boat, ATV or any other vehicle while impaired
Never getting into a vehicle operated by someone who is impaired
Calling 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired
