A recent study revealed that almost 70 per cent of Canadians feel it’s important to volunteer simply because it’s the right thing to do. Post Shreddies believes there is genuine goodness in every Canadian; it’s part of who we are as a nation and deserves to be celebrated. To applaud this goodness, the iconic homegrown cereal brand has begun a nationwide search for those spreading goodness in their community with its third annual “Search for Goodness.”

“Whether it’s a neighbour who volunteers at the local soup kitchen or the person who always helps out at the hockey arena, we all know someone filled with genuine goodness who makes a difference in our community,” says Amy Bernstein, the Senior Product Manager of Shreddies & Shredded Wheat, at Post Foods Canada Inc. “Volunteers are vital to the social fabric of communities across this country and we want to recognize those who make a difference and show them a little thanks for all the goodness they bring to others.”

Goodness is exemplified in our nation’s attitude of selflessness. A recent study commissioned by Post Foods Canada Inc. identifies Canadians’ attitude towards volunteerism and the importance of giving back. The findings show that 90 per cent of Canadians think it’s important to give back, and over half volunteer their time, with almost 60 per centdoing this at least once a week or more. Other findings include:

Canadians walk the walk and talk the talk when it comes to volunteering:

  • Almost 70 per cent volunteer their time to help someone they know with things like errands and snow removal
  • Of those who volunteer, 60 per cent volunteer for a local, community-based organization

Canadians believe volunteering results in positive outcomes:

  • Almost 80 per cent agree that genuine goodness is strongly associated with those who volunteer
  • More than 90 per cent feel a sense of pride and goodness after they volunteer
  • Almost 90 per cent agree that volunteerism is an important function in building a strong community

Raising money for charity, feeding the hungry and caring for animals are the top volunteer activities for Canadians.

The Shreddies “Search for Goodness” is an opportunity for Canadians to nominate someone who spreads goodness in their community. Nominations can be submitted by visiting before May 10, 2015. Once a person has been nominated, Canadians can vote for their favourite story once a day to help the nominee make it into the top 10 finalists. The top 10 stories will make the shortlist of nominees, and the winner will be selected by a panel of judges at Post Foods Canada Inc. The winning story will be told in a Post Shreddies’ ad.

Shreddies “Search for Goodness” commitment first began in 2013 when they started inviting Canadians to share their genuinely good stories. In 2013, Shreddies recognized Greg Epp from Saskatoon for his selfless commitment to his community hockey rink and featured his story in a National TV commercial.  In 2014, sisters Julia and Emma Mogusfrom Oakville were selected for their tireless efforts to help youth in remote communities in Northern Ontario by donating books.

“There are so many ways you can contribute to your community,” says Epp. “Every community, no matter how big or small, needs the support of people who care. I do it because it helps me feel connected to my community.”
